I will be visiting Algeria for few days in the beginning of March.
The more I search about travelling in Algeria, the more conflicting reports I read. I am starting to worry if it is a good idea to go there at all now.
I had a very strange conversation with Algerian official when applying for visa, where she was very surprised I am planning to visit Algeria on my own without knowing anyone there. She was claiming this is impossible to do???
I have booked my accommodation in Algiers and Constantine as these are the towns I would like to visit.
My questions are:
1. I am planning to get from the airport to hotel in Algiers by taxi. Are they reliable? Are they overcharging foreigners without knowledge of Arabic or French language?
2. I am planning to walk around Algiers on my own. Are there any parts of town I should avoid?
3. I am passionate about photography. I have read that zoom lens may be a problem. I am planning to take my DSLR camera with wide angle lens (no zoom). Would this cause problems at border crossing, or bring unwanted attention? I usually travel with 2 cameras and set of lens. I have been stopped last month in Morocco and asked a lot of questions before they let me in with my equipment. On this occasion I am planning to take only one camera. Any thought on this please?
I didn't find the right solution from the Internet.
